Strengthening Ties: Germany and South Africa Advance JETP Partnership

Productive Discussions in Pretoria: German Special Envoy Meets SA Deputy Ministers on Energy Shift

German Special Envoy for the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), former State Secretary Rainer Baake, concluded a productive visit to South Africa with high-level meetings focused on accelerating the country’s shift to sustainable energy.

During his stay, Baake held fruitful discussions with Deputy Minister for Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Narend Singh and Deputy Minister of Electricity and Energy Samantha Graham-Maré. The talks covered critical aspects of South Africa’s Just Energy Transition, including financing mechanisms, skills development, and inclusive strategies to move away from coal dependency while ensuring economic and social stability.

The exchanges underscored the strong bilateral partnership between Germany and South Africa under the JETP framework, which has seen Germany significantly increase its commitments—recently signaling potential additional concessional loans amid ongoing implementation. Both sides described the dialogue as constructive and built on mutual trust, highlighting shared commitment to climate goals and a just transition for affected communities.
