Pretoria Hosts First 2026 Africa Group Meeting: Focus on Unity and Africa Day
The Africa Group of Ambassadors held its inaugural plenary meeting of 2026 in Pretoria on 23 January, marking a key gathering for diplomatic coordination among African representatives in South Africa.
Chaired by H.E. Andre Nzapayeke, Ambassador of the Central African Republic and Acting Dean of the Diplomatic Corps as well as Dean of the Africa Group, the session included bureau members: the Ambassador of Chad (Vice Dean), the High Commissioner of Malawi, and the High Commissioner of Kenya. The bureau represents Africa’s five regions, supplemented by volunteers.
The orientation-focused meeting introduced newly accredited Ambassadors/ High Commissioners from Ghana, Namibia, Sahrawi Republic, Mauritius, Haiti, and Zimbabwe. On a celebratory note, attendees congratulated Senegal on their AFCON 2025 victory over hosts Morocco.
Geopolitical concerns dominated discussions, with well-wishes extended to nations facing conflicts or tensions, including Venezuela—where recent U.S. military action led to the abduction of President Nicolás Maduro—Nigeria, Somalia, and Sudan. The Ambassador of Somalia addressed the implications of Israel’s recent recognition of Somaliland, while Venezuela’s Ambassador outlined ongoing national challenges.
The Acting Dean of the Sixth Region (GRULAC), Jamaica’s High Commissioner, was introduced. The International Red Cross’s new Head of Delegation presented 2026 programs, and Rotary Club representatives proposed collaboration opportunities with Pretoria’s clubs.
The Dean announced Africa Day celebrations on 25 May 2026, with the Group’s official event on 30 May, featuring cultural shows, fairs, and activities. Committees were formed: one, coordinated by Kenya’s High Commissioner, to monitor developments related to the anti-migrant Operation Dudula movement and engage stakeholders for positive outcomes; another to foster ties with the Pan African Parliament, African Peer Review Mechanism, AUDA-NEPAD, and related bodies.
Housekeeping matters and financial planning for Africa Month were also addressed.
