Consulate General of Belgium in Cape Town Welcomes New Intern Rania Aboulkacim

The Consulate General of Belgium in Cape Town has welcomed Rania Aboulkacim to its team for a three-month internship, providing the international relations student with practical exposure to diplomacy, public diplomacy and economic engagement.

The Consulate General of Belgium in Cape Town has welcomed Rania Aboulkacim as its newest intern, marking the beginning of a three-month professional experience focused on international relations, diplomacy and humanitarian affairs.

Rania is currently in the final year of her master’s degree in International Relations and Diplomacy at the University of Antwerp. She has a strong interest in diplomacy and humanitarian work, with her internship providing an opportunity to gain first-hand insight into the operations of a diplomatic mission.

Gaining Practical Experience in Diplomacy

During her time at the Consulate General, Rania will have the opportunity to explore the world of public and economic diplomacy, while gaining a closer understanding of the work carried out by the Belgian diplomatic representation in Cape Town.

Her responsibilities will include supporting the team with research and reporting across a range of topics, while also participating in the organisation of diplomatic and cultural events.

Among the activities she is expected to become involved in are events such as King’s Day and A Taste of Belgium, which provide opportunities to promote Belgian culture, strengthen relationships and facilitate engagement between Belgium and South Africa.

Developing the Next Generation of Diplomats

Internships within diplomatic missions provide young professionals and students with valuable opportunities to bridge the gap between academic study and practical experience.

For students pursuing international relations and diplomacy, exposure to a diplomatic environment can offer important insights into areas including international cooperation, public diplomacy, economic diplomacy, political engagement, research and stakeholder relations.

Rania’s placement at the Consulate General of Belgium in Cape Town is therefore an opportunity to further develop her academic and professional interests while contributing to the work of the mission.

Exploring South Africa and Building Cultural Connections

Beyond her academic and professional interests, Rania has a passion for travelling, discovering new places and experiencing different cultures.

Her time in Cape Town will provide an opportunity to engage with South African society while experiencing the country’s diverse cultural environment. The exchange of perspectives and experiences between young professionals from different backgrounds remains an important element of international relations and people-to-people diplomacy.

The Consulate General expressed its excitement at having Rania join the team and said it looked forward to working with her during the three-month placement.

Her internship highlights the important role that youth engagement, professional development and cultural exchange can play in strengthening the next generation of international relations practitioners.
