Austrian Ambassador to South Africa Romana Königsbrun met with the newly appointed Chief Director for Western Europe and the European Union, Ms Kumalo, at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) in Pretoria.
The meeting provided an opportunity to welcome Ms Kumalo to her new role and to discuss areas of mutual interest in the relations between South Africa and Austria.
According to the Austrian Embassy in Pretoria, discussions focused on educational and scientific cooperation, technical and vocational education and training (TVET), planned bilateral visits and projects, as well as Austria’s forthcoming term as a member of the United Nations Security Council.
Strengthening South Africa–Austria relations
The engagement comes within the broader context of continued diplomatic relations between South Africa and Austria.
Ambassador Königsbrun has served as Austria’s Ambassador to South Africa since September 2022 and is also accredited to several countries across Southern Africa. The Austrian Embassy describes South Africa and Austria as partners in areas including democracy, the rules-based international order, human rights and disarmament.
The Pretoria meeting with DIRCO’s Western Europe and EU leadership highlights the importance of maintaining regular diplomatic engagement between the two countries.
Education, TVET and scientific cooperation
One of the areas highlighted during the meeting was educational and scientific cooperation, including TVET.
Technical and vocational education and training remains an important area for skills development and economic participation. Discussions around cooperation in this field can create opportunities for institutions and stakeholders to explore knowledge exchange, partnerships and potential collaborative projects.
The inclusion of scientific cooperation also points to the broader potential for collaboration between South African and Austrian institutions in areas involving research, education and innovation.
Bilateral visits and projects
The meeting also addressed a number of planned bilateral visits and projects, providing an opportunity for the two sides to consider forthcoming engagements and areas of cooperation.
Regular high-level and institutional exchanges are an important component of maintaining diplomatic relations, allowing governments to review existing cooperation while identifying new areas of mutual interest.
For South Africa and Austria, such engagements contribute to continued dialogue across diplomatic, educational, scientific and other areas of bilateral cooperation.
Austria’s upcoming UN Security Council membership
Another issue discussed was Austria’s upcoming membership of the United Nations Security Council.
Austria was elected to serve on the UN Security Council for 2027–2028, marking its fourth term on the Council. The Austrian Embassy in Pretoria has described the election as a strong sign of international trust.
Austria’s upcoming role provides another area of relevance for diplomatic engagement between Vienna and Pretoria, particularly given South Africa’s longstanding involvement in multilateral diplomacy and international organisations.
Continued diplomatic engagement
The meeting between Ambassador Königsbrun and Ms Kumalo reflects the ongoing engagement between Austria and South Africa and the role of diplomatic consultations in advancing bilateral relations.
With education, TVET, scientific cooperation, bilateral visits and multilateral issues forming part of the discussions, the engagement provides a platform for continued cooperation between the two countries.
The Austrian Embassy in Pretoria continues to serve as Austria’s diplomatic hub for South Africa and several countries in Southern Africa.
