South Africa and Kuwait have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, with renewed emphasis on economic cooperation, investment and mutually beneficial opportunities.

South Africa and Kuwait have taken steps to further strengthen their longstanding bilateral relationship following a diplomatic engagement between representatives of the two countries in Kuwait.

The engagement took place on 2 September 2026, when H.E. Ambassador Ray Medhurst, Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa to the State of Kuwait, presented copies of his Letters of Credence to H.E. Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Kuwait.

The meeting provided an opportunity for both sides to discuss the longstanding relationship between South Africa and Kuwait, while highlighting areas where cooperation can be further expanded.

Strengthening South Africa–Kuwait bilateral cooperation

Discussions focused on the importance of deepening cooperation between the two countries and maintaining the positive trajectory of South Africa–Kuwait relations.

The engagement also placed emphasis on identifying opportunities for increased collaboration, particularly in areas that can contribute to economic development and stronger commercial relations between the two countries.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the bilateral partnership and exploring new avenues for mutually beneficial cooperation.

Investment and economic opportunities

Investment and economic cooperation were highlighted as important areas for further engagement.

South Africa and Kuwait have the potential to expand commercial linkages by encouraging greater interaction between businesses, investors and other economic stakeholders.

For South Africa, stronger engagement with Kuwait forms part of broader efforts to expand international economic partnerships and identify opportunities for South African businesses to access markets, investment and commercial networks abroad.

Kuwait, meanwhile, remains an important partner in the Gulf region, providing opportunities for expanded engagement across areas of mutual economic interest.

Building on longstanding relations

The latest diplomatic engagement reflects the continued importance attached to the relationship between South Africa and Kuwait.

Beyond diplomatic relations, stronger interaction between the two countries can support increased people-to-people engagement, business cooperation and the exploration of new economic opportunities.

The commitment expressed during the meeting provides a platform for continued dialogue between the two governments and relevant stakeholders as South Africa and Kuwait seek to deepen their partnership.
