Two Malaysian Engagements Highlight Growing Trade and Defence Cooperation with South Africa

Malaysia is strengthening its engagement with South Africa through a range of initiatives covering trade, investment, market access, defence and advanced technology.

Two separate engagements in August 2026 illustrate the breadth of Malaysia’s current outreach in South Africa. The first, held on 20 August, brought together businesses and government stakeholders to explore opportunities for greater trade and investment cooperation, including the use of Malaysia as a gateway to the ASEAN market. The second, held on 17 August, saw the High Commission of Malaysia in Pretoria visit HENSOLDT South Africa to explore areas of mutual interest in defence and advanced technology.

While addressing different areas of cooperation, both engagements reflect efforts to deepen bilateral ties and identify practical opportunities for closer Malaysia-South Africa cooperation.

Business engagement focuses on trade, investment and ASEAN market access

On 20 August 2026, the High Commission of Malaysia in Pretoria, in partnership with MATRADE Johannesburg, hosted the “Doing Business with Malaysia: Enhancing Market Access and Cooperation – Malaysia as a Gateway to ASEAN” programme.

The engagement brought together more than 100 South African business leaders and entrepreneurs, alongside key stakeholders from South Africa’s Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC) and MIDA Dubai.

The programme focused on strengthening economic, trade and investment ties between Malaysia and South Africa, while highlighting the strategic position of both countries as gateways to their respective regions.

According to the High Commission, bilateral trade between Malaysia and South Africa reached approximately US$1.33 billion in 2025, with considerable scope for further diversification and expansion.

Key sectors identified for cooperation

The business engagement highlighted a number of sectors offering potential opportunities for South African and Malaysian companies, including:

  • Automotive
  • Electrical and electronics (E&E)
  • Palm oil downstream processing
  • Mineral processing and technology
  • Renewable energy
  • Specialised engineering
  • Agriculture
  • Halal economy

The opportunities extend beyond conventional trade and include investment, joint ventures, technology transfer, skills development and participation in regional value chains.

Malaysia is encouraging South African businesses to use the country as a platform to access the wider ASEAN market, while Malaysian companies are being encouraged to explore South Africa as a strategic base for accessing markets across Africa.

The discussions also highlighted opportunities within the halal economy, including participation in MIHAS 2026 and the potential to connect businesses with international markets.

Separate engagement explores defence and advanced technology

Three days earlier, on 17 August 2026, the High Commission of Malaysia in Pretoria, led by H.E. Datuk Yubazlan Yusof, undertook a separate visit to HENSOLDT South Africa.

The visit focused specifically on the defence and technology sectors, providing an opportunity for the Malaysian delegation and HENSOLDT South Africa to exchange perspectives and explore areas of mutual interest.

HENSOLDT South Africa is a provider of advanced sensor solutions and defence technologies, with expertise in areas including radar, electronic warfare, optronics and integrated systems.

The engagement provided an opportunity to examine potential areas for closer cooperation and to strengthen engagement around defence-related technologies.

The Malaysian High Commission said it values such opportunities to deepen partnerships and foster closer cooperation between Malaysia and South Africa.

Two engagements, broader bilateral opportunities

Although the two August engagements addressed different sectors, they demonstrate the diverse nature of Malaysia’s engagement with South Africa.

The 20 August programme concentrated on business, trade, investment and access to ASEAN markets, bringing together companies and government stakeholders to identify commercial opportunities.

The 17 August visit to HENSOLDT South Africa, meanwhile, focused on defence technology and industrial engagement, highlighting another potential area for bilateral cooperation.

Together, the engagements point to a relationship that extends beyond traditional diplomatic interaction, with Malaysia and South Africa exploring practical opportunities across commerce, investment, technology and strategic industries.

As both countries seek to expand their respective regional partnerships, continued engagement between Malaysian and South African institutions, businesses and technology stakeholders could create further opportunities for cooperation in the years ahead.
