Ankara University Rector Leads Delegation to University of Johannesburg and University of Pretoria

Prof. Dr. Necdet Ünüvar, Rector of Ankara University, led a delegation on a visit to two of South Africa’s leading higher education institutions, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and the University of Pretoria (UP), highlighting the growing academic and institutional cooperation between Türkiye and South Africa.

The engagements focused on strengthening existing partnerships and creating new opportunities for collaboration in higher education, research, teaching and learning, knowledge exchange and institutional development.

A key outcome of the visit was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Ankara University and the University of Johannesburg, opening new avenues for cooperation between the two institutions.

Ankara University and University of Johannesburg Sign MoU

The new MoU provides a framework for expanded collaboration between Ankara University and the University of Johannesburg, with potential cooperation covering a range of academic and institutional areas.

The partnership is expected to support opportunities in teaching and learning, joint research, academic and knowledge exchange, and broader institutional collaboration.

Such agreements are increasingly important in strengthening internationalisation within higher education, allowing universities to share expertise, develop joint academic initiatives and provide opportunities for researchers, academics and students to engage across borders.

The agreement also reflects the broader importance of university-to-university relationships in strengthening ties between countries.

Engagements with the University of Pretoria

The Ankara University delegation also held discussions at the University of Pretoria, with the engagements focused on further advancing the existing academic partnership between the two institutions.

The discussions highlighted the value of continued cooperation and the potential to deepen academic links through research, knowledge exchange and institutional engagement.

The University of Pretoria is one of South Africa’s prominent research-intensive universities, making continued collaboration with Ankara University an important platform for strengthening academic connections between Türkiye and South Africa.

Academic Partnerships Supporting Türkiye–South Africa Relations

The visit by Prof. Dr. Necdet Ünüvar and his delegation comes against the backdrop of growing cooperation between Türkiye and South Africa across a range of sectors.

While diplomatic and economic relations remain important pillars of bilateral engagement, higher education and academic cooperation provide another significant avenue for strengthening relations between the two countries.

Universities serve as important platforms for international cooperation by connecting researchers, academics and students while facilitating the exchange of knowledge and expertise.

The partnerships involving Ankara University, the University of Johannesburg and the University of Pretoria therefore have significance beyond individual institutional agreements.

They contribute to building stronger people-to-people links and creating opportunities for collaboration that can support innovation, research and the advancement of knowledge.

Expanding Opportunities for Research and Knowledge Exchange

The cooperation between the universities could create opportunities for researchers and academics to work together on areas of shared interest, while student and academic exchanges can contribute to greater international exposure and knowledge sharing.

Joint research initiatives can also help universities address shared global and regional challenges while strengthening their research networks.

For South Africa and Türkiye, deeper university partnerships can provide an additional foundation for long-term cooperation and contribute to the development of stronger academic and professional networks.

A Positive Step for Bilateral Relations

The visit of Prof. Dr. Necdet Ünüvar and the Ankara University delegation demonstrates the important role that higher education can play in advancing international relations.

The signing of the MoU with the University of Johannesburg, together with discussions at the University of Pretoria to further strengthen their existing partnership, represents a positive development in Türkiye–South Africa academic cooperation.

As universities continue to expand their international partnerships, collaborations of this nature can make a valuable contribution to bilateral relations while supporting teaching, research, knowledge exchange and the advancement of higher education.
