The 80th Independence Day of Pakistan was commemorated in Pretoria with a flag-hoisting ceremony hosted by the High Commission of Pakistan, bringing together members of the Pakistani community, friends of Pakistan in South Africa, and officers and officials of the High Commission.
The ceremony, held on 14 August, provided an opportunity to reflect on Pakistan’s historic journey since independence, honour the sacrifices of the Pakistan Movement and reaffirm the country’s commitment to peace, development and international cooperation.

The ceremony commenced with High Commissioner of Pakistan to South Africa Malik Muhammad Farooq hoisting the national flag as the National Anthem of Pakistan was played.
Messages from the President of Pakistan, Prime Minister of Pakistan and Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister of Pakistan were subsequently read out.
The messages paid tribute to the sacrifices and vision of the leaders of the Pakistan Movement while highlighting Pakistan’s journey of resilience, progress and national development.
They also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to peace, stability and regional cooperation, while underscoring the importance of national unity, economic progress and collective efforts towards building a prosperous future.
Tribute to the Leaders of the Pakistan Movement
Addressing the gathering, High Commissioner Malik Muhammad Farooq reflected on the historic significance of 14 August 1947, paying tribute to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Allama Muhammad Iqbal, and the leaders and workers of the Pakistan Movement.
He noted that Pakistan had encountered and overcome numerous challenges throughout its national journey, emphasising the courage, resilience and determination demonstrated by its people.
The High Commissioner expressed confidence in Pakistan’s future, stressing that the country was poised for a bright and prosperous future through continued national efforts and unity.
Pakistan Reaffirms Commitment to Peace and Diplomacy
The High Commissioner also highlighted Pakistan’s continued commitment to promoting peace and stability through diplomacy, dialogue and constructive engagement.
He reiterated Pakistan’s principled position regarding the Jammu and Kashmir dispute and reaffirmed Pakistan’s political, diplomatic and moral support for the Kashmiri people in their pursuit of the right to self-determination.
