The Embassy of Côte d’Ivoire in South Africa commemorated the 66th anniversary of Côte d’Ivoire’s independence on Friday, 7 August 2026, bringing together diplomats, members of the Ivorian community, friends of Côte d’Ivoire and distinguished guests in Pretoria.
The commemorative ceremony provided an opportunity to reflect on Côte d’Ivoire’s journey as an independent nation while celebrating the values of unity, brotherhood, peace, national pride and service that continue to shape the country’s national identity.
The occasion was attended by Ambassador Alain Moriba Koné, alongside Ambassador of the Republic of Guinea to South Africa, who was present as a representative of a country invited by the President of Côte d’Ivoire, President Alassane Ouattara. A military detachment also participated in the commemorative ceremony, adding a ceremonial dimension to the celebrations.
Côte d’Ivoire Marks 66 Years of Independence
Côte d’Ivoire gained independence from France on 7 August 1960, making 2026 a significant milestone as the country marks 66 years of independence.

Embassy Staff Honoured for Service and Dedication
One of the highlights of the 66th Independence Day celebration was the presentation of national and military distinctions to members of the Embassy staff in recognition of their commitment, professionalism and dedication to their responsibilities.
Among those honoured was Major General Okou Atsain Henri Médard, Defence Attaché, who received the Medal of the Armed Forces, Bronze rank.
Sergeant-Batcher Boua James, Head of Security at the Embassy, was promoted to the rank of Knight of the Ivorian Order of Merit, recognising his service and commitment.
Mr Aké Agnero Isaac, Accountant and Assistant Paymaster, was also distinguished for his dedication, seniority and professional commitment in carrying out his duties.
The honours underscored the importance attached to public service and recognised individuals whose professional careers reflect the values of loyalty, professionalism, dedication and a strong sense of service.
Strengthening Bonds with the Ivorian Community
Beyond the formal commemorations and awards, the Independence Day celebration offered an opportunity for the Ivorian community in South Africa and friends of Côte d’Ivoire to come together.
