The South African High Commission in Singapore has continued to advance bilateral relations through a series of engagements focused on parliamentary oversight, public-sector accountability, digital innovation, higher education and economic cooperation.

Led by High Commissioner Madiepetsane Charlotte Lobe, the Mission recently facilitated engagements involving the Standing Committee on the Auditor-General and held discussions with representatives of the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT).

The engagements, held between 25 June and 1 July 2026, demonstrated the growing scope of South Africa-Singapore relations and the role of diplomatic missions in building practical institutional partnerships that support national development priorities.

Strengthening Parliamentary Oversight and Audit Cooperation

From 25 to 26 June 2026, the South African High Commission in Singapore welcomed the Standing Committee on the Auditor-General for a programme of institutional engagements focused on strengthening oversight, accountability and knowledge exchange.

During the visit, the delegation held constructive meetings with Singapore’s Public Accounts Committee of Parliament and the Auditor-General’s Office.

The South African delegation also engaged directly with Singapore’s Auditor-General, Ng Wai Choong, and Deputy Auditor-General Rina Chua.

Discussions provided an opportunity to exchange perspectives on parliamentary oversight, public-sector auditing and the respective responsibilities of institutions tasked with ensuring accountability in the management of public resources.

The engagements enabled participants to compare approaches, share experiences and identify opportunities for continued institutional cooperation. Importantly, the meetings also established bilateral contacts that could support future exchanges and collaboration between relevant institutions in South Africa and Singapore.

Diplomacy and Parliamentary Engagement Working Together

As part of the programme, the South African High Commission hosted a debriefing session led by High Commissioner Madiepetsane Charlotte Lobe.

The session reflected on the mandate and work of the South African Mission in Singapore and considered how parliamentary diplomacy and institutional exchanges can contribute to strengthening bilateral relations.

The engagement highlighted the importance of coordination between South Africa’s diplomatic missions and parliamentary structures when undertaking international engagements. Such cooperation can help ensure that official visits contribute to broader foreign policy objectives while establishing sustainable relationships between counterpart institutions.

The visit reaffirmed the importance both countries attach to transparency, accountability and institutional cooperation.

Exploring Cooperation with the Singapore Institute of Technology

Building on the Mission’s programme of strategic engagement, the South African High Commission welcomed representatives of the Singapore Institute of Technology on 1 July 2026.

The High Commission, led by High Commissioner Lobe, held discussions with Mr Jonathan Tay and Ms Kelly Khoo on potential areas of cooperation relevant to South Africa’s economic and human capital development agenda.

The discussions explored opportunities in digital technology, the digital economy, financial technology, robotics, health technology, and hospitality and tourism management.

These sectors are increasingly important to South Africa’s economic development priorities, particularly as the country seeks to expand digital capabilities, develop future-ready skills, strengthen innovation ecosystems and prepare young people for changing labour markets.

Connecting Education with Industry and Economic Development

As Singapore’s first university of applied learning, SIT has developed an education model centred on practical training and collaboration with industry. Its academic focus includes technology and innovation-related fields, as well as health sciences and hospitality and tourism management.

For South Africa, cooperation in these areas could contribute to broader conversations around skills development, technology transfer, academic collaboration, research partnerships and stronger connections between educational institutions and industry.

The inclusion of hospitality and tourism management in the discussions is also significant given the importance of tourism to employment creation and economic growth in South Africa.

Similarly, discussions on fintech, robotics and the digital economy reflect the increasing importance of emerging technologies in shaping economic competitiveness and the future of work.

Broadening South Africa-Singapore Relations

The recent engagements demonstrate a multidimensional approach to South Africa-Singapore relations.
