The Danish Embassy in Pretoria recently hosted a National Day celebration to commemorate Grundlovsdag (Constitution Day), marking 177 years since the adoption of Denmark’s Constitution and highlighting the enduring democratic values that continue to strengthen relations between Denmark and South Africa.
The event brought together a diverse gathering of South African and Danish partners, government representatives, members of the diplomatic corps, business leaders, and friends of Denmark to celebrate the principles of democracy, human rights, and civic responsibility.
Ambassador Karin Poulsen Reflects on the Importance of Constitutional Values
Welcoming guests to the celebration, Danish Ambassador Karin Poulsen reflected on the continued relevance of constitutional principles in today’s world.
Her remarks underscored the role constitutions play in safeguarding democracy, promoting accountability, and ensuring the protection of citizens’ rights for future generations.
“Our constitutions may have been written many years ago – but the values and principles are still, and if not more important, in the world we live in today,” Ambassador Poulsen said.
South Africa and Denmark United by Democratic Principles
The significance of shared constitutional values was also highlighted by John Steenhuisen, South Africa’s Minister of Agriculture, who addressed guests during the celebration.
Steenhuisen noted that the advancement of human and civil rights enshrined in both countries’ constitutions continues to serve as a foundation for the strong bilateral relationship between South Africa and Denmark.
His remarks reinforced the close cooperation between the two nations across a range of sectors, including governance, sustainability, trade, and development.
Showcasing Danish Culture and Heritage
To commemorate the occasion, the embassy offered guests a unique insight into Danish culture and history. Miniature copies of Denmark’s Constitution, provided by the Danish Parliament (Folketinget), were displayed, allowing attendees to explore the values that underpin Danish democracy while even testing their Danish language skills.
The celebration also featured iconic symbols of Denmark, including LEGO displays and model windmills, reflecting the country’s reputation for innovation, sustainability, and creativity.
Guests enjoyed traditional Danish hospitality, including homemade rugbrød (Danish rye bread), adding an authentic cultural touch to the festivities.
Stirring Musical Tribute by Tshwane Gospel Choir
A highlight of the evening was a special performance by the Tshwane Gospel Choir, which delivered moving renditions of both the Danish and South African national anthems.
The performance symbolised the friendship and mutual respect shared between the two countries and added a memorable cultural dimension to the celebration.
