SA Becomes 33rd African Nation to Secure Tariff-Free Entry to Chinese Market
South Africa has secured a major trade breakthrough with China, signing a framework economic partnership agreement that grants zero-tariff treatment on 100% of tariff lines for South African exports to the Chinese market. The deal, signed in Beijing by South African Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Parks Tau and Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao, aligns with World Trade Organization rules and provides long-term, stable access to China’s vast consumer base.
This makes South Africa the 33rd African nation to formalize such a framework with Beijing. It follows China’s June 2025 announcement extending zero-tariff treatment across all tariff lines to 53 African countries maintaining diplomatic relations with China, aiming to integrate African economies more deeply into its ultra-large market and share development opportunities.
The agreement is expected to boost South African sectors like mining, agriculture, automotive, and renewable energy, while encouraging greater Chinese investment in South Africa. Negotiations for an early harvest deal are slated for completion by March 2026.
