UNHCR’s Kavita Belani Presents Credentials to DIRCO Deputy Minister Alvin Botes

Malaysia-Born UNHCR Veteran Takes Helm in South Africa Multi-Country Office

On 21 January 2026, Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), Mr Alvin Botes, formally received credentials from Ms Kavita Belani, the new Representative of the UNHCR South Africa Multi-Country Office (SAMCO).

Ms Belani, a Malaysian national and trained classical pianist, brings over 25 years of distinguished service with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. A qualified law professional, she has held senior leadership roles across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Europe, including as UNHCR Representative in Armenia. Her career reflects a deep commitment to international law, refugee protection, multilateral cooperation, and sustainable development.

In her new post, Ms Belani will lead efforts to secure lasting solutions for refugees and asylum-seekers in South Africa, safeguarding their rights and well-being amid regional displacement challenges. The ceremony underscores South Africa’s ongoing partnership with UNHCR in upholding humanitarian principles and fostering inclusive responses to forced migration.
